There are some very short road sections but remarkably the distance on tarmac is no more than half a mile in total.

Ride co-organiser Heather Weston who has been shielding previously and is therefore running the event in conjunction with Shelley Bates said: “This is a lovely course but more testing than it appears. Riders have to be aware that although it is potentially fast, there are a lot of tights turns along the way, and in some places there are ditches. The going has been spot-on in recent weeks but with the hot dry spell, riders need to be aware of the ground conditions.”

The FEI classes will see riders compete at one star 100km (CEI *), two star 120km (CEI **) and three star 140km (CEI ***) level. The 140km CEI 3* class will give some combinations the chance to secure vital qualifiers for both next year’s World and European Endurance Championships.

Riders taking part in the top class include Norfolk-based Nicky Thorne with Kamilcia, Cornwall’s Annie Joppe with HS Chiara, Bella Fricker with Spanish Heir from North Buckinghamshire, Powys-based Fiona Griffiths with Balishla, Surrey rider Harry Ingram with Cabirat Larzac, James Dickinson with Magdy and Katie Bedwin with Aberllwyd Ibn Phariz both from West Sussex, Shropshire rider Laura Graham with Warrens Hill Farrah, Dorset-based Nikki Malcolm with Oso Spiralling Wind and Sue Box from Monmouthshire with HS Shaman.

Endurance GB and the organising team have stressed that the event will be run with strict adherence to Covid 19 regulations.

Heather Weston said: “Running a qualifying ride was suggested to me by Di Luke in early July. Since then a lot of people have worked extremely hard to get this up and running. These include Board members especially Operations Director, Esther Young, Chair, Phil Nunnerley and Health and Safety Director Rosemary Henderson. Several FEI officials have also given me support, particularly Di Luke, Paul Luke and Linda Crawford and Brian Floyd-Davies while Jennalyn Anncliffe at the BEF helped us get the FEI schedule over the line.

“In terms of preparation for an FEI ride in times of Covid there has been a great deal of extra work, and many extra items have needed to be purchased. I now know all about carrying out World Health Organisation risk assessments and mitigations!

“For all those attending the event, it must be noted that it will look different, with clear expectations regarding social distancing, the use of face masks and hand sanitisers. No-one will be allowed onto the venue unless they have a role as rider or crew or as an official. Crew points have been set where people can observe social distancing requirements. The FEI and EGB have produced clear guidelines, which we are following, no exceptions!”

Bella Fricker with Spanish Heir

Bella Fricker, one of those set to compete in the 140km FEI 3* class said: “As this is the only FEI endurance competition taking place in the UK this year, I am certain I am not the only one thrilled at the opportunity to compete this weekend and I am sure I speak for all the riders in thanking organisers and Endurance GB for their hard work in putting this on for us.

“Going abroad has been ruled out for many due to the quarantine measures, so to have a 3* on home soil is exactly what we need. I am very much focused on qualification for a place on the Senior team at the European Championships in 2021 so really needed a 3* ride this autumn to help me with this. Aside from this it is great to have the 2* and 1* classes to help qualify fresh combinations and enable them to enjoy FEI level endurance for years to come.”

John Black FEI Champion and Advanced Winner at Lavenham 2019

https://egb.myclubhouse.co.uk/Cms/Spaces/NEWS/News/Strong+entries+as+FEI+Competition+returns+for+Endurance+GB+
